2023 MONHEGAN ISLAND RETREAT: Plein Air Painting, Light Hiking & Island Tour, Sept 15-17

Join Melanie Barash Levitt, owner of Jackson Art, for a unique experience combining plein air painting, (beginner and intermediate welcome) light hiking, gallery visits, and touring Monhegan Island.  This retreat will be reserved for a small group taking place in one of the most beautiful places in the world!

Accommodations: Meals and transportation not included.  A block of rooms has been reserved at the Trailing Yew (hearty breakfast included) but accommodations can be booked anywhere on the island including the Island Inn, Monhegan House, Shining Sails or house rentals on VRBO.

Cost for the class includes painting instruction and demos, island/gallery tour and a wine/cheese welcome upon arrival. Melanie will be working in oils but students can also work in medium of choice. Participants should bring all their own art supplies. Supply list and more details to follow.

Cost: $365 per/person,  Friday, 9/15/23  – Sunday 9/17/23. Class starts Friday afternoon upon ferry arrival (wine & cheese welcome) and ends Sunday afternoon at ferry departure. Or extend your stay to enjoy the island!

Melanie Barash Levitt has been exploring and painting on Monhegan Island for the last 19 years. Monhegan is a small, rocky island ten miles from the nearest mainland and scarcely a square mile in area. It is accessible only by boat and there are no cars or paved roads on the Island. Artists have been drawn to the rugged beauty of Monhegan for over 150 years.  The peaceful nature of the island combined with the picturesque landscape make Monhegan an ideal location to immerse yourself in  art and relaxation.  A packing list will be sent to registered students. (in case of inclement weather, we will paint from the Trailing Yew)

Weekend Schedule:

Friday, Sept 15.-Arrive on the afternoon ferry to Monhegan Island. (We recommend the 3pm from Port Clyde for the smoothest ride!) Melanie will meet you at the dock (your bags will be picked up and transported to the Trailing Yew or other Inn/Hotel/Rental)  We will have a wine and cheese welcome at the Trailing Yew and go over our weekend plans. In the evening we will have dinner at Fish Beach followed by sunset painting demo by the dock. Paint along if you would like or just watch the demo.

Saturday, Sept 16 – We will meet at the Trailing Yew and then take a short walk to paint at Lobster Cove. Bring a backpack to put your supplies in. *Optional beer tasting at Monhegan Brewing or paint in the village in the afternoon. Group will meet for dinner (optional) at the Island Inn  (full menu with lots of choices including fresh seafood and lobster!)

Sunday, Sept 17-  We will paint at Horn Hill in the morning and then head towards the dock for lunch/painting and participants can take the afternoon ferry. Or, spend and extra night on the island!

Cancellation Policy. We ask that you to give us six weeks notice if you need to cancel. You will receive a full refund minus $50 cancellation fee.  Cancellations should be made by phone by calling (603) 387-3463. This provides us the opportunity to fill the space.
